“Dementia May Affect Your Memory, But Music Affects Your Soul …”

How Shining Star CLE will touch those we care for

Imagine back to when you first heard a song or a tune that struck a chord in you – no matter how it made you feel, this particular song stayed with you throughout your life. And now, whenever you hear it, you’re transported back to that moment in time.

That’s the effect Shining Star CLE, a solo-singing competition for Northeast Ohio high school students, will have on its contestants – forming an everlasting memory, not only for them, but also for our residents who will enjoy watching auditions and the semi-final performance at Montefiore.

Bridging music, memories and those with dementia.

Music allows individuals with dementia to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories stored deep within the brain, according to Music & Memory – a non-profit organization rooted in neuroscience research. While Alzheimer’s damages the ability to recall facts and details, it does not destroythese lasting connections between a favorite song and the memory associated
with it, no matter how long ago.

Montefiore’s Memory Care Network implements music programs, services and events that help reawaken these precious memories in individuals with dementia. Our network includes two memory care assisted living communities– The Willensky Residence at Montefiore in Beachwood and The David and Freda Robinson Residence at The Weils in Chagrin Falls – and the Home Smart Memory Care program for those who wish to remain at home.

“As someone who has worked in the memory care field their entire career, I know music is one of the most powerful tools for those with dementia. I’ve seen individuals who can’t speak suddenly sing an entire song while tapping their feet to the beat. Residents who are agitated or upset can be calmed and comforted. Dementia may affect your memory, but music affects your soul – and the right song can trigger memories long-forgotten.”

Kristen Morelli, ADC, CDP, Montefiore Director, Memory Care and Resident Life.

Proceeds from this event and playbill ads will benefit memory care services offered by Montefiore and The Weils, nonprofit organizations and leaders in senior healthcare.
